I often get sucked in by marketing tricks like the rugged Wild Atlantic Way but in fairness some of them provide great road trips. This one was based on and around the frilly Romantic Road (Romantische Straße), which is the highway between Würzburg and Füssen in Southern Germany.

Everything looks like it’s straight out of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang (it was filmed here), or one of those good old evil fairy tales that you might remember from before they got all Disneyfied and cleaned up.

I’ve lived in Germany for 23 years but I’ve never made it to the South to explore all those gems! I’ve only ever been to Munich but that’s it. Your photos are just proof that I should really visit the region along the romantic road!

So far, I have only been to Rothenburg ob der Tauber and absolutely loved it. We went on a Nightwatchman Tour which was great fun.

I did this trip with some friends on my first ever trip to Europe. (26 years ago!) Your photos are way better than mine, which were old film ones. We started in Bonn, stayed in Rothenburg (which I adored), and of course finished in Fussen. We had a special encounter at Fussen. My friend was working in Bonn (which was still the place where embassies were based) and had a contact who lived near Fussen. So his son met us, took us up the cable car and we did a forest walk for a few hours, before meeting all the family in this gorgeous glade for vespers, and then we walked down to the carpark at Neuschwanstein at dusk. The views from the trail and the bridge behind the castle were stunning. Thanks for reminding me how gorgeous this area was!

I’m not a massive fan of road trips as I hate being cooped up in a car but a route that goes past so many wonderful fairytale castles and pretty German towns has to be win-win. GORGEOUS, GORGEOUS pictures! It almost doesn’t look real, like it’s a miniature doll set or something. I love the idea of the non-cleaned-up fairy tale setting.
